The best job in the world

The best job in the world The best job in the worldPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister A huge salary package, a multi-million dollar beach house and a job description to have fun. Is this the best job in the world? The elusive career dream for many people is to land a gig where the work is enjoyable, the salary high and the office spacious a job in which they live to work rather than work to live. If you are reading this while cooped up in a beige cubicle with another seven hours of staring at spreadsheets ahead of you imagine the following. You are given a ticket to fly to Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, paid a whopping $150 000 for six months and put up rent-free in a multi-million dollar beach house. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have as much fun as possible. Not surprisingly, the currently advertised stelle of caretaker on Hamilton Island is being billed as The Best Job in the World. Sound pretty good? Too good to be true? Well of course theres a catch. Once you are shacked up in paradise youll have a few small responsibilities. In between the swimming, snorkelling, sailing, lazing by the pool, socialising at the countless bars and restaurants, and soaking up rays, you will have to write weekly blogs and make photo diaries and video updates to tell the world exactly how much fun you are having. Its all part of an elaborate marketing campaign by Tourism Queensland aimed at increasing the profile of the Great Barrier Reef islands. The campaign is expected to generate $70 million worth of publicity worldwide and youll be the main spokesperson. Not surprisingly, the notion of swapping the rat race for island time has appealed to lots of people. Nearly 20 000 people from 200 countries have applied for the position in what has turned from an application process into a competition. New computers had to be brought in after servers were overloaded with applications with the website getting 40 hits per second. All candida tes had to create a video application explaining why they were uniquely qualified for the job, but with the competition hot all the stops have been pulled out. People have sent out press releases, sourced their own media coverage and established websites dedicated to their application. A shortlist of 50 applicants will be announced on March 2, the final 11 candidates will be flown to the island for interviews from May 3, and the lucky winner will be announced on 6 May.Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Mana...Study modeOn CampusPayment optionsFEE-HELPUpfront paymentCourse guide+ FREE eBrochureEnquire Online Enquire OnlineTourism ResourcesTour guide sample resumeTour guide sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Marketing OfficerProject ManagerEvent CoordinatorSmall Business ManagerDepartment ManagerPopular Career Searcheshow to become a tour guide in australiagovernment funded tourism courses melbournehow to become a travel werber australiaonline travel agent courseshow to become a travel agent in australiaTourism CoursesDiploma of Hospitality ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Business in Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMaster of International Tourism and Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineDiploma of Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineHelen IsbisterRelated ArticlesBrowse moreNo leave, no lifeRetrenchment, redundancy and recession are the three buzzwords that have thrown the worklife balance, which we have been enjoying over the prosperous last decade, off its throne.Meet an Anzac Gallipoli tour leaderId been living in Turkey for a number of years and, as an Australian, it was inevitable that I ended up working with Australians coming over to Gallipoli for Anzac day.Beware of bad seeds in the fruit-picking industryFruit-picking is the backpackers rite of passage. The Dawn of Electric Vehicles

The Dawn of Electric Vehicles The Dawn of Electric Vehicles The Dawn of Electric VehiclesWhat is going on these days among the Detroit automakers can fairly be called the second electrification of America and Canada. The first electrification was Americas homes and businesses. This time its North Americas personal and business transportation, as the electric vehicle (EV) seems poised for its long-awaited takeoff in 2012.Detroit automakers have offered electric cars before, only to give up when drivers proved uninterested. Investment this time is orders of magnitude larger. Owners of this generation of EVs are happy with the economics driving automakers to bet big with investments in RD, production engineering, and manufacturing. In the next few years, automakers plan to put tens of thousands of EVs on U.S. and Canadian roads. A $25-billion U.S. Department of Energy loan fund is helping them retool and retrain workers. Automakers also get tax breaks for hiring in Midwestern states. EV buyers get rebates as high as $7,500.Upcoming ChallengesA scan of what the automakers and industry watchers are saying uncovers several upcoming challenges for engineers.Dual-mode transmissions some of Detroits most complicated powertrains everthat are needed in large hybrid vehicles. EVs, however, need no mechanical transmissions, gear cases, differentials, and the like. With power curves far smoother than gasoline engines, EV motors connect directly to axles and wheels.Accelerated substitution of engineered plastics, composites, and aluminum for sheet-metal steel in doors, fenders, quarter panels, hoods, roofs, etc.High-voltage/high-amperage motor controls, AC/DC inverters, and related mechatronics hardware with embedded software that can stand up to highway shock and vibration and big temperature swings.Extending EV ranges to 250 miles or so, up from just a few dozen miles between battery recharges now. This is why hybrids, with or without electric plugs, preceded EVs into deale r showrooms and city streets.Mass-producing lithium ion batteries, which are less costly, longer-lived, smaller, and lighter than the nickel-metal-hydride batteries powering most of todays hybrids.Finding new rare-earth metals for more efficient EV motors.Production and installation of an infrastructure of tens of thousands of 240-V recharging stations.Electrification InvestmentsNearly all of the 30-positiv auto brands sold in North America offer an EV or a gasolineelectric hybrid some offer several (as of mid-2011). Among the most aggressive are Ford Motor Co. and General Motors LLC. Chrysler Group LLC is focusing instead on wringing more power from gasoline and diesel, though it will produce an EV starting in 2012, based on the Fiat 500 from its parent company, Fiat S.p.A. in Italy. The Fiat 500. Image courtesy of Fiat.Corporate vehicle fleet buyers are taking notice. General Electric Co. has said it will replace half its company vehicles, a worldwide fleet of 65,000, with 25,000 n ew EVs plus 15,000 conversions. It is likely that GE will urge its larger suppliers to do likewise.Fords efforts in five areas were detailed by Chuck Gray, chief engineer of global core engineering hybrid and electric vehicles at a 2011 auto industry conference. Gray cited automatic start-stop, a fuel and power saver advanced instrument panels with better human-machine interfaces regenerative braking, which makes electricity every time the brakes are applied) and better electric motors. In an industry first, Ford retooled its Wayne, MI, plant to assemble conventionally powered vehicles, hybrids, and EVs on the same line.Electric car battery.A resurgent General Motors (GM) is putting almost $250 million into its White Marsh (Baltimore, MD), transmission plant to make EV motors, the first U.S. automaker to do so. It is also hiring 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan to develop, validate, and manufacture automotive battery, electric motor, and power control technologies in-hous e as core competencies.GMs other electrification investments are on a similar scale, including a total of $700 million just in Michigan (eight plants) to support the Chevrolet Volt EV. Half that sum is going to GMs Hamtramck (Detroit) plant that assembles the Volt. The U.S. auto industrys only battery pack manufacturing plant, also in Michigan, is getting $43 million. Powertrain operations in feuerstein and Bay City, MI, and Defiance, OH, are getting $162 million. GM has also invested in several high-tech EV-component companies.President Barack Obama has challenged automakers to put one million EVs on the road by 2015. Thats equal to one out of 12 cars sold in 2010. Mass production of EVs will certainly clean up vehicle emissions problems. But recharging millions of lithium ion batteries every few days will boost electricity demand. How that demand will be met is another set of engineering challenges.Jack Thornton is an independent writer.President Barack Obama has challenged automa kers to put one million EVs on the road by 2015.

Handling Conflict in the Workplace Constructively as an Intern

Handling Conflict in the Workplace Constructively as an InternHandling Conflict in the Workplace Constructively as an InternConflicts in the workplace can range from very petty annoyances that dont necessarily affect your work to a full-scale confrontation that could affect an entire department or workplace if youre interning or working for a small employer. Conflict can make any job very stressful so its important to find ways to handle it so that both parties experience a win-win situation. Handling conflict is a skill that anyone can develop just by taking the time to ask some key questions and also by not making assumptions about what other people might be thinking or feeling. There are many opportunities for us to learn how to handle conflict better which oftentimes may consist of trial and error and finding a technique that works for you and your style of interacting with people. Is Conflict Unavoidable? It is unrealistic to expect that you will never have to handle some ki nd of conflict in the workplace. With so many types of different partalities and different ways of seeing things, conflict is usually a given so its best to learn how to handle it early on and to the best of your ability. Taking an aggressive approach or being defensive are usually two ways that will definitely not get you where you want to go. First off, you will want to take a step back to see if you are able to get an objective view of what really is going on. Understanding both sides of any issue is a great beginning of handling conflict in a constructive way. Admitting that you are wrong when appropriate can also move you forward in creating positive relationships in the future. Learning to Handle Conflict as a College Student As a college student, you have probably had to learn how to handle conflict at some time during your college years. Living with one or more roommates in a residence hall can often be very difficult and requires some finesse in order to make a living arrangement that works for all involved. College courses that require team collaboration can often be a time of high stress since everyone has different ideas and different levels of involvement. Periods of high stress can make situations more volatile, and having tojuggle the many commitments you are faced with in college can cause people to be more sensitive. College is an excellent time to learn the nuances of handling conflict successfully. At some point there will be herausforderungs to solve in any work situation and the consequences of poorly handling conflicts in the workplace can greatly affect your working relationships and your credibility as a true professional in the field. Handling Conflict Requires Honest Communication When handling conflict in the workplace, one of the first things you will want to do is see if you can communicate honestly with the person or persons you are having a conflict with. Oftentimes conflict occurs because of a misunderstanding and makin g assumptions as to why something is happening without any input from the other side. Communicating honestly with the other person may be all you need to come to an agreement and nip the problem in the beginning before it has time to grow and fester. In some cases approaching someone that you are having a problem with is very difficult or impossible and in that case you will probably want to make an appointment to speak with your supervisor to ask their suggestions on ways you can deal with the problem yourself. Most Employers Have Established Policies to Help Handle Workplace Conflict Most employers have conflict resolution policies in place. Oftentimes there are a series of steps that an employer will recommend that an employee take when dealing with problems they are encountering in the workplace. Since employee conflict can affect so much more than whats going on just between two people, employers want to ensure that any problems between employees or within any one specific department are dealt with quickly and in a way where both parties feel accepted and heard. If you have failed to resolve a conflict by speaking directly to the other person or your supervisor, employers usually have a chain of command of where you can go next to help you solve the problem. Its important to follow company rules and utilize all channels the company has set in place to show the employer your dedication in solving the problem and moving on to do your part in making a more harmonious workplace.

Survey Your emails and Slacks are likely being monitored

Survey Your emails and Slacks are likely being monitored Survey Your emails and Slacks are likely being monitored If you worry about your boss reading through your private messages at work, you are right to be paranoid. Take it from an IT worker whose job it is to manage your office technology. Alfresco surveyed 307 IT workers at U.S. and U.K. large companies and these workers acknowledged a hard truth: yeah, your office messages are probably being monitored.The IT workers surveyed said that  98% of companies are tracking their employees’ digital activity.Survey: A majority of companies are tracking employees onlineIf you’re an employee, be careful what you search for in a company computer browser. The top three items that the IT workers said companies monitor are emails, digital browser history, and the instant messages within Slack or Chatter.Worse, too many of us are still unaware of this. The majority of IT workers said we would be “concerned” by the amount of activity being tracked. Some even went a bit farther than that. Eleven percent of respondents said that employees would be †œhorrified” to know how much digital activity their company can see.When you gossip about layoffs and coworkers within a Slack message, it’s easy to believe that these messages are seemingly just between you and the intended recipient. But Slack stands for  Searchable Log of All Communication and Knowledge, and through its  Plus plan, employers gain the ability to access all of your messages, chats, and files from public and private channels.This is a reminder to every employee that employers are not just watching what you say out loud, they are also watching what you do. Think twice before having that sensitive conversation on an office channel.close dialogAdvertisement close dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012255 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close { z-index: 2;}@-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -ms-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -ms-transform: rotate( 360deg); } } @-moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -moz-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -moz-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { transform: rotate(0deg); } to { transform: rotate(360deg); } } #bx-close-inside-1012255 { top: 0; right: 0; } /* KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper { padding-top: 0!important; height: 100%;}.bx-custom#bx-campaign-1012255 #bx-creative-1012255 .bx-wrap { height: auto;}/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper v ideo { position: static;}/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *:first-child {width: 100%;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative {background-color: transparent;border-style: none;max-width: 900px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close {stroke: white;background-color: black;border-style: solid;border-color: white;border-width: 1px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-AFvXBOB {padding: 10px;display: block;width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y {width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y *:first-child {padding: 2px 4px;font-size: 10px;color: rgb(255, 255, 255);text-transform: uppercase;background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34);}

Silence How to find it at work, and why you might need it to focus

Silence How to find it at work, and why you might need it to focus Silence How to find it at work, and why you might need it to focus Achieving a balance of sounds can be challenging-  especially if you work in an open office.  That’s why some people have a tougher time focusing on tasks. But there are ways to get the silence you crave to get work done. Are you a ‘highly sensitive person’?People have varying tolerances to sound, but some are more sensitive to it than others.Psychologist Elaine Aron’s research  has shown  that  one of the characteristics of a “highly-sensitive person” is an extreme reaction to loud noises - or in fact, any noises. The personality profile of the highly sensitive person is that of someone who is creative, needs a lot of time alone to recharge, and reacts very strongly to any strong sensory input, from caffeine to powerful smells to hunger. If you fall into this category, don’t worry- it’s not a bad thing, it just means you have to work harder to preserve your peace and seek balance at work. Seeking out silence is a healthy practice to start with.According to a  2017 H arvard Business Review article, “recent studies are showing that taking time for silence restores the nervous system, helps sustain energy, and conditions our minds to be more adaptive and responsive to the complex environments in which so many of us now live, work, and lead.”What to do if you’re sensitive to soundA little quiet time can go a long way. Here’s how to achieve it at work.Move to a quieter spaceOffice conference rooms can be such a gift as long as there aren’t many people mingling and talking outside. To be clear: quiet office spaces for individual work are a necessity, not an option.  An article  from the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University highlighted the impact noise can have on the quality of our work. Noise distracts us and reduces our memory and comprehension. It said that “performance studies indicate that tasks requiring reading comprehension and memory are the most sensitive to noise, especially noise sources related to co-workers’ speech ,” citing a specific study, and that “research indicates that prolonged exposure to noise reduces office workers’ motivation to persist at a difficult task,” citing other research.Practice  meditationBecause noise can be so unsettling, it’s important to have a strategy to counter it or calm it down. Here’s how to practice “breath meditation.”According to Harvard Men’s Health Watch, “simple breathing meditation requires only that you find a comfortable position in a place with minimal distractions. You may sit, stand, or walk- whichever you prefer. Many people find the sitting position to be best. Two ingredients are required to make breath meditation work,” which the article lists as “a sustained focus for your mind such as the repetition of a sound, word, phrase, or movement” and “allowing everyday thoughts to come and go as you focus on the repetition.”But if you’d rather use an app, consider trying out Calm, Headspace, or Aura. You can also listen to “binaural beats,” or sounds set to helpful frequencies for relaxation, which are available on apps or on YouTube.Invest in headphonesA pair of giant noise-cancelling headphones, which can cost anywhere from $50 to $300 for an upscale pair, are the saviors of many people at work - not only do they drown out sounds around your desk so you can focus, but their giant size also visually signals to people that you’re occupied. But headphones that fit in your ear might actually be more effective, according to Berkeley Wellness: “earphones that fit in the ear (like earplugs) are better at blocking background noises than are those that sit on top of the ear canal opening- as are any type of active noise-canceling headphones- so you are more likely to keep the music at a lower, safer level.”For the highly-sensitive among us, moving to a quieter setting, meditation and headphones are  ways to get “in the zone” at work. Then just watch your work improve.

How to Interview at a Job Fair

How to Interview at a Job Fair How to Interview at a Job Fair Job fairs are only advantageous if you have a game plan. Follow these steps so you don’t squander away your opportunity. After waiting in lines for nearly four hours, you finally step up to speak with yet another human-resources manager. It’s the 11th company you’ve met with at this job fair. How can you be sure any of these recruiters will remember you among the hundreds of candidates they’ve already met?Find the openings Make the best use of your time at a job fair by researching something about the firms attending and targeting first those that have job listings that interest you. Most job fairs put out a list of the attending employers. Kelly Dingee, a sourcing researcher and executive trainer for AIRS, an executive search firm, suggested scanning the list to see which companies have openings right now. Those firms should take priority over companies that may seem like really great work environments but have no openings, she said. “Go to the company that has the actual opening.”Dress to kill Frank Risalvato, founder of the recruiting firm IRES Inc., attends job fairs and certain job-networking functions to look for employees for different offices that his company is trying to staff. “I subscribe to the old school adage that you only have one opportunity to make a best first impression. There is no second chance for a first impression. I may be there for 45 minutes to an hour in a room full of people, and one of the first clues I look for is dress. You have got to be dressed appropriately for the event and that is how I start scanning the crowd.” Men, leave your herringbone sports jackets with leather patches at home!Memorize your elevator pitch Your time to interview at a job fair is usually very limited. “You need to be able to sum up who you are and what you do in two minutes. It really is about how you present yourself. Even if you have been at that job fair for hours, you still need to walk up to your last interview as fresh as you were in the first,” Dingee said. “Try to keep yourself upbeat and up-tempo. Be as excited to talk to them as you were to talk to the other 25 recruiters you met.” Interview the company If you have time, make sure that the interview serves your informational needs. “You should not put yourself at the level of a victim or be filled with desperation,” said actress Deidrie Henry, who equates the job interview process to the rounds of auditions actors undergo. “You are also auditioning them.”“Your mindset should be, ‘Are you also someone I want to work with? Is your company one that I would want to sign on to?’ Recognize that as much as you need them, they need you. So also interview them. You should not necessarily only talk about yourself but be curious about what they are trying to sell you.”Be memorablePrepare and bring something that will help the recruiter remember you. Dingee suggests a creative business card, perhaps with an unusual shape or color. “Having something a little gimmicky is not a bad thing, even if it means you have to go to one of these business-card places online to make your own business cards,” she said. Include social-media contacts like your Linkedin and Twitter accounts. It makes you more accessible to them, she said. “Some people may actually be very green thinking, so bring a flash drive with your resume on it instead of a hard-copy resume. Anything that makes you stand out will definitely be helpful.”

10 Mindsets That Drive Successful People Toward Their Goals (Over and Over Again)

10 Mindsets That Drive Successful People Toward Their Goals (Over and Over Again) 10 Mindsets That Drive Successful People Toward Their Goals (Over and Over Again) Have you ever wondered what drives self-made, ultra-successful people to such incredible heights? Ultra-successful people view life differently from other people, and it’s reflected in how they live, work, save, invest, and give. Here are 10 ways ultra-successful people view life and behave differently, many of which you can successfully incorporate in your life. 1.  They Think Big Ultra-successful people look at problems and think about big solutions. They don’t look for incremental ways to solve minor problems, or shy away from big challenges because they look too difficult, or require too much risk. Venture capitalist Tim Draper  hit this point on the head at a recent lunch, where he explained to young entrepreneurs that he invests only in people solving huge problems, because only big  solutions lead to real change and  opportunities. 2. They Bring the Best Talent Around Them My friend Katherine O’Neill, who runs Jumpstart New Jersey Angels, often says of founders pitching us: “Do they want to be king or do they want to be successful?” A desire to be surrounded by great talent, rather than being king of a sycophantic sandbox, often separates those who truly are successful from those who merely wish to be. 3.  They Take Huge But Calculated Risks Calculated risk is different from gambling. It’s widely reported that ultra-successful people “take risks,” which is true, but there is a deeper truth: These people  are clear-eyed about assessing the challenges, risks, and benefits, and are willing to take the risk if it is worth it. Steve Jobs is a perfect example. In the late 1990s, it was a huge risk to return to Apple  and risk his reputation- again- on the company that had unceremoniously thrown him out and was on the edge of collapse. But Jobs assessed the risks, decided he could turn it around, and dove in headfirst. 4.  They Execute Being ultra-successful requires being good at follow through. You can’t just have great ideas, or be a great talker. Most ultra-successful people are capable not only of having good ideas and identifying opportunities, but galvanizing others behind them. 5.  They Read Great minds like to read what other great minds think, and do, and learn from them. The first lesson that one ultra-successful person taught me years ago was: “Sure, I know what I don’t know, but I want to learn as much of it as possible- and there are others who can teach it to me.” Ultra-successful people are life-long learners and respect the knowledge others have in their domains and what they can learn. The mantra among most I know is: “If you know everything, you learn nothing.” 6.  They Negotiate Hard- But Smart There is an old adage that wealthy people didn’t make it by spending it. This is certainly true. Although many ultra-successful people are incredibly philanthropic and generous of time and money, in business they tend to be shrewd negotiators with great attention to detail. Indeed, as they grow more successful, this tendency appears to increase, rather than lessen, despite their reduced need to sweat the details. 7.  They Have Routines Most ultra-successful people have clear, repeatable routines they will  vary when necessary but stick to whenever possible. Continually changing routines upsets the body and creates stress, which can in turn reduce rest and complicate decision making.  Using routines to increase your comfort level can help increase your success. 8.  They Focus on Relationships, Not Transactions Ultra-successful people, particularly the most successful entrepreneurs, typically develop a relatively small set of highly valued relationships with people they work with again and again. Once mutual trust is built, it becomes much easier to have repeat success together. Indeed, many of the most successful startup teams have worked together on multiple projects, and went to the same group of investors for each one! 9.  They Cluster Ultra-successful people want to be around other people who they feel are similar. Those clusters of individuals then tend to build more meaningful relationships and work together with more frequency and success. 10. They Care Just yesterday, I brought a project to an ultra-successful investor who told me, “This seems very compelling, but I’m not going to do it because I can’t bring myself to care.” Mercenary reasons rarely ever work. Ultra-successful people know they need to care and have passion to be engaged enough for something to be successful. More From Inc. Its entirely okay if you dont go home for Thanksgiving this year

It’s entirely okay if you don't go home for Thanksgiving this year It’s entirely okay if you don't go home for Thanksgiving this year The holidays come in a rush, with a whirlwind of travel expectations in addition to the gifts you have to buy. As soon as Halloween passes, you’re in the countdown to Thanksgiving, which quickly leads to the winter succession of celebrations. It’s a quick wind-up from binging on candy to traveling home twice in two months.Unless you don’t.There are so many reasons why it’s completely, absolutely okay not to make it home for Thanksgiving. It doesn’t mean you’re avoiding your family (and it’s also alright if you are). It doesn’t make you a holiday-hating grump (but if turkey isn’t your thing, that’s cool, too). It does mean you have other stuff going on, whether it’s a tight budget, a full travel schedule or other people to celebrate with.Personally, I love my family and I don’t really care for turkey dinners, but this will be the third Thanksgiving since I moved away from my Midwestern home state that I’ll be missing the holiday. And if you’ve got any of th e three rationals I use in my no RSVP up your sleeve, you can feel just as confident in choosing to skip your parents’ potatoes, turkey and pie.If you can’t afford it …During my first year living in New York City, I was scraping together rent every month. There was no way I could spring for a flight across the country. And my fellow intern and assistant friends were dealing with the same problem.Holiday travel is expensive, sometimes terrifyingly so when you realize it’s two inflated priced tickets in two months. That can pinch your wallet further than is possible if you’re at the beginning of your career working with an entry-level salary. If your budget is a little tight, it’s okay if you have to opt out. It’s completely valid to choose groceries, rent or even a necessary new pair of boots. For those eager to see their families but wary of paying exorbitant holiday travel prices, we suggest going home another time of year. If your family is really set on it, you could even bake a pumpkin pie in March when travel deals are a little kinder on your wallet. If you want to use those vacation days …In July, I found the perfect flight deal - $500 roundtrip to Thailand. The only catch? The flight leaves the Saturday before Thanksgiving. So I called my family and told them that I’d bring them some souvenirs from Bangkok for Christmas but I’d miss this year’s Turkey Day.Let’s be real: Vacation days are at a premium. So the Thursday and Friday around Thanksgiving (and sometimes an extra half day on Wednesday) are prime real estate for a trip over the long weekend. We get it if you want to venture out into the world for those five days. Bonus points if you get the fam to come along for the ride!If you’ve made your own traditions…The word “Friendsgiving” seems to have percolated up through the Twitterverse and other spheres of the internet around 2007, right when the first millennials were hitting their mid-twenties. And we, as a generation , have adopted the idea of eating turkey, potatoes and pie with our friends - our chosen family. Once Pinterest came around, we were sold on the idea of DIYing our own Thanksgivings in small apartments, sometimes without an actual dinner table. No matter if you adore your family’s inside jokes or if you’re trying your hardest to avoid your racist, sexist Uncle Arnold’s commentary over sweet potatoes, it’s alright if you want to spend Thanksgiving with your friends instead. And for those of you who celebrate Friendsgiving the weekend before with the squad and find yourself riding solo on the third Thursday in November, make yourself a nice turkey, brie and apple grilled cheese, pour yourself a glass of spiked cider and queue up a nice binge-watch on Netflix. Now, unless you’re some sort of magician, it’s hard to prep breakfast in bed for yourself entirely. But you can do some clever meal hacking to make sure your cook time is minimal in the morning and you can roll out of bed, fetch your breakfast and roll right back in.We  suggest overnight oats  or a pre-stacked yogurt parfait. Both can be made in advance, eaten cold, look pretty for any #selfcare photos you want for the ‘gram  and create minimal mess when eating on your duvet. This  post  was originally published on  Swirled.com  in the Thrive section, which covers valuable career and personal finance content for Millennials.

Why the Top Third of Your Resume Counts

Why the Top Third of Your Resume Counts Why the Top Third of Your Resume Counts Make sure your resume is smartphone friendly. Tablet, smartphone, laptop - you name it â€" it’s hard to imagine functioning in today’s world without having access to on-the-go technology. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that technology continues to play a big part in how job seekers and recruiters find each other.Imagine for a second that you have spent hours crafting a standout resume and e-mailed it to a recruiter or hiring manager. Guess what? You can never be sure how she’ll end up viewing it. The recruiter could view it on an iPhone, a desktop computer or as a hard copy. Picture what your executive resume looks like when viewed on a hand-held device - it simply does not have the same effect. If only the top third of your resume is displayed on a mini screen, can your resume still effectively sell you? The answer is yes, if you have strategically placed a strong, branded profile on the top portion of your executive resume. Generally your resume profile would contain a combination of a few key bits of information . This can include a title header, personal branding statement, unique selling proposition, areas of expertise, industry preferences, job targets, top career achievements, degree from a top university and/or much more.In order to create a resume profile that communicates your immediate value and prompts the reader to contact you, it’s vital that you determine the following:1. How do you want to be perceived?Keep in mind that your executive resume is not a career obituary, so only the key career highlights that are most relevant to your target position will count. Consequently you want to maximize your professional reputation and position yourself as a solution for the company. Are you a turnaround strategist, finance and investment guru, technology innovator or marketing specialist? Determine what you want your reader’s key take-away to be and keep this in mind as you prepare the top third of your resume.2. What title header best represents you?A title header on your executive r esume should be like a handshake. It should confidently say, “I am a senior marketing executive,” or “My areas of expertise lie in human resources management and global technology.” It is generally placed immediately following your personal contact information on the resume. For example, an operations executive with extensive experience in global markets could have a title header that simply says:OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVEWithout meeting this individual, you can immediately get an idea of his background. It also sets expectations for the type of achievements you’re capable of.3. How would you summarize top career achievements?Once you know how you want to be perceived, you must support your title header with evidence of top performance and achievements. Looking over your entire career, what is the consistent trend of achievements and contributions that stand out? Have you repeatedly grown startup companies into industry leaders, are you highly competent at spearheadin g cost-cutting initiatives or do you maximize emerging technologies to power internal operations? For example, a marketing executive who excels at building companies through market share expansion could have a title header and unique selling proposition that says:SENIOR MARKETING EXECUTIVESenior Vice President / Vice President“I deliver growth for companies every time.” Accurately forecasting industry trends and consumer interests that allow companies to exceed revenue projections, maximize ROI performance, achieve strong profitability and realize significant market growthBecause the body of the resume will provide detailed content about specific position and industry-related achievements, you could opt to use an executive summary instead of a unique selling proposition. This approach showcases performance trends overall:SENIOR MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVENonprofits Philanthropic Organizations with Focus on Mental Health, Children and EducationVisionary Strategy…Innovative Thought Lea dership…Collaborative Management Style…Another good approach for those with many focuses is to follow the title header with an area of expertise. Going back to the Ops executive, here’s an example of how one could lay this out:OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVESupply Chain Management Planning Inventory Management Logistics Systems ImplementationStartup, Turnaround High-Growth Companies - High-Tech Manufacturing IndustriesDomestic International MarketsIt takes extra effort and careful planning to achieve a technology-friendly layout, but it is certainly worth the time in the end!

Why you dont have to be an extrovert to make it to the top

Why you don’t have to be an extrovert to make it to the top Why you don’t have to be an extrovert to make it to the top Susan Cain  is a co-founder of Quiet Revolution, a curator of the Next Big Idea Club, and the world-renowned author of  Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.  Elena L. Botelho  has advised over 200 CEOs and boards, first as a strategy consultant at McKinsey and currently as a senior partner at ghSMART. After her recent book,  The CEO Next Door: The 4 Behaviors that Transform Ordinary People into World-Class Leaders, was selected as a Spring Next Big Idea Club selection, she and Susan sat down to discuss  the surprising truth about what it takes to become a leader.Susan:  Based on all this research, you found that there were real misperceptions in what we think makes a good leader, and who should be promoted to leadership positions. Can you talk a little bit about what those misperceptions are?Elena:  What it takes to succeed is something that’s constantly in the public spotlight. Many of us have this picture in our minds of this larger-than-life perso nality, who rides in on a white horse, and with just the force of natural charisma, gets the troops to follow them through hell or high water. I was [once] in a boardroom, and the board was working through a decision of who to appoint as CEO. We had assessed several candidates for the position, and it was clear that there was one candidate who looked like a really strong choice. He had a tremendous track record, he had experience in the industry - he checked every box.And yet, the board was circling, and circling, and circling. They just weren’t comfortable, and the lead director finally said, “Elena, I get it. He’s been really successful. … But he’s just such an  introvert. This is a global business - how is this person going to lead the troops?” Frankly, after all the work that you, [Susan,] have done, to think that people at the very top are still [worried about] introversion is really striking. In our research, when we looked at the results that leaders deliver, int roverted leaders were not any less successful than the extroverts once they got the job. Now, getting the job is easier for a charismatic, easily-connecting individual. But when you look at who actually delivers results, introverts were even slightly overrepresented at the very top of performance. The facts flew in the face of convention. The other piece is that I ask folks, “What do you picture when you think of someone who will eventually become a CEO?” Many of us think of that kid in high school who was voted Most Likely to Succeed, or that annoying person in a group meeting who takes charge and finds themselves at the whiteboard.Well, we’ve interviewed [thousands of] CEOs, and [while] about 30% of them set a goal for becoming a CEO fairly early in life, 70% had no idea what they wanted to be when they grew up. They showed up to work every day, they practiced the behaviors that we later discovered were really instrumental [to success,] and only when they got within earshot o f the CEO role did this aspiration become relevant for them.I often hear women [in particular] saying, “Gosh, I don’t know if I’m cut out to be CEO.” Well, 70% of the CEOs out there actually didn’t know they were cut out to be CEO until they got really, really close to the role. This article first appeared on Heleo.

3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea

3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea 3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea By EssaySnarkWhy is visiting schools before applying for your MBA so important? Here are some questions to consider:Would you buy a car without test-driving it first? We're not the first to use this metaphor, but it works. Applying for an MBA program without visiting first is like buying a car sight-unseen. (Derrick Bolton, Stanford's head of admissions, actually equates it to buying a housethe cost of tuition plus the opportunity cost of foregoing a salary for two years.) B-school is a MUCH bigger investmentand more life-changingthan any new car will ever be. If you're going to drop six figures on your graduate education, why not pony up a little time and money in advance to check out how that investment might work for you?Do you really know what the school is all about? You might not get it just from reading their websites, but every MBA program truly is different. School visits can not only give you a feel for the campus, the professors and the students, they can also give you val uable insights from the admissions officers when you attend an info session. These insights can help you write your essays. All schools want to know why you've chosen them. You'll need to explain it in your essays and your interview. Everyone wants to go to Harvard, because it's Harvard. The applicants who are admitted are the ones who can articulate why they want to go there. Are you truly certain you want to go to that school? Only one business school encourages all applicants to visit campus (and interview) before applying, and that school is Tuck, at Dartmouth. Most other b-schools say that you're welcome to visit, but they understand if you cannot, and they insist that visiting doesn't give anyone an advantage. (Of course, what we've just discussed indicates a very strong advantage, in terms of the learning you'll gain about the school, which you can feed into the essays you'll be writing.)So why does Tuck want you to swing by for a spell? We suspect the main reason for this is due to their location. They are up in the mountains, in Hanover, N.H., remote and removed from everything. All that's going on at Tuck is Tuck. It's a completely different b-school experience than you'd have at, say, NYU-Stern, which is more a collection of big buildings scattered throughout New York Citys Greenwich Village than a campus per se. The admissions folks at Tuck want to make sure that you know what you're getting into before you get in. So they want you to visit, to see it for yourself, and possibly save everyone some time if you discover it's not the right place for you.School visits help you go beyond the MBA rankings, when selecting target schools, to understanding how a school is differentiated. They can make a big difference for you in the entire process of applying. Visiting the school in advance of applying is somewhat comparable to an informational interview that you might have when exploring a new career. You're doing your research, asking some questions, seei ng if it's a fit. You're kicking the tires, as it were. And, you might actually discover that you don't want to go there. We had a client visit UC-Berkeley once. Afterwards, she flew back home to New York feeling more committed than ever to go to Columbia (and yes, she got in). Haas wasn't for her. She never would've known that without putting forth the effort to go discover it for herself.Cruise over to the EssaySnark blog for more advice on school visits and applying to Tuck, NYU-Stern, UC-Berkeley Haas, Columbia, Harvard... and any other great MBA program.
